♦ Techn. Explosif très voisin de la mélinite.

● lyddite nom féminin (de Lydd, nom propre) Explosif dérivé de l'acide picrique. (Il fut utilisé pendant la Première Guerre mondiale.)

⇒LYDDITE, subst. fém.
CHIM. Explosif composé d'acide picrique, de nitrobenzène et de vaseline. Deux cents pièces tirent sur eux à la lyddite nuit et jour. Les voitures sont en feu (THARAUD, Dingley, 1906, p. 29).
Prononc. et Orth.:[lidit]. A. PÉRÈS, Pierres et roches, 1896, p. 21: lydite. Étymol. et Hist. 1890 (Lar. 19e Suppl., s.v. explosif). Empr. au terme angl. dér. du nom de la ville de Grande-Bretagne Lydd située dans le Kent où fut expérimenté cet explosif (cf. NED).
